Highlights from the 2025 FMER-PRAM Crossroad Discussion Panel

On Friday, June 13, 2025, the McGill Family Medicine Education Research (FMER) Group and the Participatory Research at McGill (PRAM) team co-hosted the second annual FMER-PRAM Crossroad Discussion Panel at the McGill Faculty Club. This year’s theme, Shared Decision-Making in Family Medicine Education and Practice, brought together a dynamic group of faculty members, clinicians, graduate students, and community partners for a rich exchange of ideas.

Facilitated by Professors Anne Cockcroft (PRAM) and Charo Rodriguez (FMER), the event featured four panellists and two discussants—clinicians, educators, and researchers—who offered diverse insights on the relevance, challenges, and future directions of shared decision-making (SDM) in both clinical care and medical education. Discussions also included reflections on early findings from an ongoing narrative review of shared decision-making (SDM) in family medicine.

A Participatory Twist: The Photovoice Exhibit

In the spirit of participation science, attendees were invited in advance to submit photographs and captions illustrating the benefits or barriers of SDM. The resulting Photovoice Exhibition transformed the venue into a visual storytelling space. Participants voted on their favourite images and discussed the themes they evoked, creating a collaborative moment of reflection and learning.

The event drew 22 participants and was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback, with attendees praising the respectful tone and thought-provoking dialogue. The session underscored the importance of integrating participation science into the evolving landscape of family medicine scholarship.

Looking Ahead

The FMER and PRAM teams are deeply grateful to all presenters, discussants, participants, and contributors who made this event a success. We remain committed to fostering impactful, interdisciplinary conversations that push the boundaries of educational and clinical practice in family medicine.

Stay tuned for updates on future Crossroad Discussions!

It was a pleasure to attend this event. Shared decision-making has been an important topic for me since my residency training, and it’s always a challenge to get it right in order to provide the best care for patients.
I also really appreciated hearing the different perspectives shared by the participants during the discussion.
