Professional Identity Formation as Immigration | January 23, 2025
We are excited to announce a special in-person presentation by Dr. Lara Varpio, a renowned expert in medical education research. Dr. Varpio will be presenting on Professional Identity Formation as Immigration on Thursday, January 23, 2025, from 4:00 to 5:30 PM at Holmes Hall (3605 de la Montagne).
About the Presentation:
Dr. Varpio will explore the transformative and deeply personal journey of professional identity formation (PIF) in health professions. Drawing parallels to immigration, this session will delve into the challenges and rewards of taking on the responsibilities of a healthcare professional. The session will also highlight the dangers of PIF and how recognizing PIF as subjectification can mitigate these challenges.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Understand PIF as a personal and social process.
- Learn why PIF is a transformative journey starting before matriculation.
- Recognize the dangers of PIF highlighted in the literature.
- Explore how subjectification can address these challenges.
About Dr. Lara Varpio:
Dr. Varpio is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, and Co-Director of Research in Medical Education at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She is internationally recognized for her expertise in medical education research and has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications.
