FMER Member Pierre-Paul Tellier Co-Edits New WONCA Guide to Adolescent and Young Adult Care
Overview:
FMER member Dr. Pierre-Paul Tellier has co-edited a new addition to the WONCA Family Medicine Book Series. Working with Adolescents and Young Adults in General Practice: A Guide for Family Physicians was launched on July 1, 2026, during the 30th WONCA Europe Conference in Paris.
Edited by Dr. Tellier, Dr. Muna Chowdhury, and Dr. Maria Veronica Svetaz, the book was developed through the WONCA Special Interest Group on Adolescent and Young Adult Care. It recognizes adolescence and young adulthood as a distinct developmental stage, rather than simply a transition between childhood and adulthood, and addresses the particular health care needs that arise during this period.
The book offers family physicians practical guidance for working with young people in everyday clinical practice. It highlights how changes in communication and consultation style can strengthen engagement and trust. It also promotes a strength-based approach that considers the whole person, including their relationships, abilities, experiences, goals, and developing sense of identity.
This approach is especially important for young adults, who can become disconnected from health services during a period marked by significant changes in education, employment, relationships, and identity. By providing consistent, respectful, and person-centred care, family physicians can help young people remain connected to the health care system and develop the skills needed to manage their health into adulthood.
Dr. Tellier is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at McGill University and an expert in adolescent medicine. His clinical, educational, and research interests include adolescent health and the care of sexual- and gender-diverse populations.
